Altrusa International, Inc. of Santa Maria on November 19th.

Our theme tree was called "Forever Home For the Holidays".

We want to thank this Altrusa group for sponsoring the Adoption Office in our new building and for all of their support, as well as the volunteers and donors who helped make this tree possible.

Yesterday was our "Holiday" Pet Photo Day at Arrow Camera & it was a festive success.

Our thanks go out to Arrow Camera (Margrit & David) for their generousity in allowing us to use their shop and for taking all of the photographs; Dottie Lyons for providing the yummy cupcakes, coffee & lunch for the volunteers; the SMVHS Volunteers (Claire Sheehy, Vonnie Stewart, Bobbi Gilman & Jaymie Hudson).

Construction continues

Construction is moving right along (well, maybe not today with the rain) - these photos were all taken Thursday, November 10th.

With the masonry done, we are now getting the roofing on the kennels and the main building continues to get framed.

The kennel buildings are really starting to look like kennels.

In addition to the masonry happening, the framing is being marked on the main building and should start going up at the end of the month.

Even the future parking lot is being staked.

Framing has begun on the new site

Framing has begun on the new site & concrete should be poured next week. It was very exciting that the actually kennels & main building outline could be made out (maybe not from the angle of the photos, but when actually on the site).

Yesterday on the new site the tractors were busy at work again. They are currently grading for the final building pad, sub-grading for the parking lot and excavating for the septic system.

Students read for Animals

Today there was a very nice article in the Santa Maria Times about Students from the Patterson Road 4th Grade Class 2010-2011 who raised $750 from a one-day read-a-thon.

Some of the students visited the Humane Society yesterday to deliver their donation and experience the facility.

A tree at the new site will boast a plaque that says "Patterson Road fourth-grade class 2010-2011".

We can't thank this group enough for their participation and generosity.

New Site Activity

Yesterday out on the new site there was lots of activity. The City of Santa Maria has begun the process of installing storm water drains, then there will be streetlights & widening of the road.

During the month of January we ran a TV advertising campaign and gave away a Sony Playstation 3 donated by Charter Media.

We had about 160 entries and on February 1st we had a drawing for the Winner at the Humane Society.

And the winner is....... Karla Rodriguez from Santa Maria.

Below is a photo of the entries and the PS3, as well as the winner with the PS3 and her pup.
Karla is a Humane Society supporter and hopes to become a volunteer in the near future.

YEAH!!! Rough grading has begun on the new site. Several tractors began grading on the 23rd and it was an exciting day. Stay tuned for progress reports and lots of photos.

PET PROJECT Holiday Tree

On Saturday, SMVHS participated in Altrusa International, Inc. of Santa Maria's Twentieth Annual Holiday Extravaganza.

Vonnie and Geri (with a little help from Lauren), designed a PET PROJECT Tree entitled "New Beginnings 2012".

It was a very successful event with about 700 people in attendance.

We were delayed slightly because of the rain, but should be starting this next week.

Barn Party was lots of FUN!!

Even though it was a rainy Sunday afternoon, about 100 people turned out for our Barn Party at Edwards Barn in Nipomo.

We had a yummy dinner, 50/50 raffle, Silent Auction, Live Auction for Naming Opportunities, Line Dance Lesson by DJ/Teacher Vanessa Robertson & dancing to Beaujolais Country - quite a fun-filled evening for a good cause.

New Charter Commercial

On Thursday, September 30th we filmed another Charter Media commercial at the shelter.

Our mom was Audra with her daughter, 5 year old Maddie from Santa Maria.
Our top dog of the day was Digby (still available for adoption).

This should begin airing very soon on Animal Planet, Discovery, Fox News, HGTV, History, Nickelodeon and USA, so be sure to watch for it and make your donation to PET PROJECT.

Riverbench Fundraiser

Last Friday (Sept 3rd) Riverbench Winery hosted a funraiser for us - "Paws, Pinot & Pizza". They generously donated all of the proceeds from the wine tasting & pizza to SMVHS.

Wags 'n Whiskers

Last Sunday the Humane Society had a booth at the Wags 'n Whiskers Festival in Goleta.

The festival, which is intended to encourage the adoption of shelter animals throughout the county, was hosted by C.A.R.E.4Paws.

As you can see by the photo, PET PROJECT was well represented.

We had quite a bit of interest and were encouraged by how many people came by the booth that heard we were building a new facility and had seen our commercial.

The Great Catsby and the Barking 20's (our Four-Legged Affair) on Saturday, May 1st, was quite a success.

Tres Hermanas Event

Our fundraiser at Tres Hermanas Winery on February 13, 2010 to benefit the animals at SMVHS was a huge success.

Paulette & Marvin Teixeira generously handled all of the details and prepared a delicious BBQ, had live music by Valley Road Band and even had a live auction.

We can't thank them enough for planning and hosting this event.

Roxy Brown (one of the adoptable dogs at the Humane Society) attended the PET PROJECT meeting on Monday night and after being quite timid at first.

then became VERY comfortable and quite sleepy.

Bench Naming Opportunities

PET PROJECT now has an exciting naming opportunity for the new adoption facility - BENCHES.

They will be placed in a variety of locations thoughout the new complex.

These benches are made from concrete (heavy duty) with a personalized plaque on the top.

Depending on the size and shape, these are available for $1,000-$1,500.

A couple of weeks ago we shot another commercial with Larry Lavagnino, the Mayor of Santa Maria. Jill Tucker and the Mayor are checking out the best spot to shoot the commercial.

He was kind enough to spend some of his valuable time out at the Adoption Facility to show the existing facility and help promote PET PROJECT'S new Animal Care Complex.

Ben Slocum from KCOY is getting him ready for filming.

I must say he was a great sport, as it was quite windy and very bright (not to mention stinky) out there that day. We really appreciate his support!

Of course Jill & I had to do one final photo with the Mayor before he left us.

New Commercial

On October 16th, KCOY came out to the facility and filmed a new commercial that will be airing very soon and will alternate with our current commercial.

Our goal was to introduce our new Executive Director, Jill Tucker, and emphasize the importance of the work that we do at the Humane Society, as well as show off one of our adorable puppies.

And, of course, the kitties!

Even Shawna participated and played with the dogs in the play yard.

Keep your televisions tuned to local channels 11 & 12 next week to check it out.

We're filming another commercial in a few days and I'll try to post some behind-the-scenes shots from that one, too.

Welcome to the PET PROJECT Blog. Our plan is to keep you updated on the current activities and behind the scenes activities that are happening.

On Sunday, September 27th, we celebrated the public phase of our Capital Campaign for PET PROJECT. The "Harvesting our Dreams" fundraising event was held at Rancho Miranda with about 80 people in attendance, where a good time was had by all.

George Cudd, Committee Chair, filled everyone in on the importance of the new complex we will be building.

The yummy BBQ was donated by Dan & Peggy Blough and was prepared by the Breakfast Rotary Club.

Entertainment was provided by Jim Enos & Liz Douglas, with a special guest singer, Bo Cudd (our very own Board President).

The adorable beer cart was provided by Mike Larrabee of Cental Coast Distributing (that's Mike and Shannon in the photo).

The Silent Auction was a great success and us gals even had fun putting together some of the baskets before the event.
